How to Style Art Prints at Home (Without a Gallery Wall)

The easiest way to style an art print is to skip the gallery wall and start with one. Lean it on a shelf, hang it over a table you use every day, or pair two small prints on the stairs. One print in the right spot already looks finished.

Here's how I'd do it in a real house.

Do I need a gallery wall to decorate with art prints?

No. A gallery wall is one way to do it, not the only way. Most of us don't have the wall, the free Saturday, or the patience to hang eleven frames straight.

One print, placed well, does more than you'd think.

What's the easiest way to style an art print?

Start with one of these:

  1. Lean it. Set a framed print on a shelf, a mantel, or the back of the kitchen counter and lean it against the wall. No holes, no hardware, and you can swap it whenever you want and, quite honestly, this is my preference with the prints I have styled in my home. The Peony State print is a good one for a kitchen shelf.

  2. Hang one over a table you use. A dining table, a desk, a console by the door. Hang it a little lower than feels natural, about six to eight inches above the furniture, so the two look like they belong together.

  3. Pair two small ones. Stairs, a hallway, or either side of a window. Same size frames, same spacing, and it looks planned.

  4. Tuck one by the bed. Lean a small print on the nightstand next to a lamp and a book. I particularly like my 5x7 prints I have on our nightstands.

  5. Put one where you actually stand. The sink, the entry, next to the coffee maker. The places you pause are the places you'll really see it. The State of Indiana Wildflowers print is a sweet one for an entry.

Where in the house do art prints work best?

Anywhere you stop for a second.

You're waiting on the coffee. There's a print leaning behind the canister making the counter look finished and you feel that sense of beauty in your home. The kitchen nook, the entry, the bedside, the end of a hallway. You don't need a big living room wall.

How do I pick the right print for a room?

Pick the one that feels like a place you'd want to be. Florals feel fresh in a kitchen. A landscape feels welcoming in an entry. If you're stuck, start with a color you already have in the room and look for a print that picks it up.

If you want something that won't feel dated, a watercolor landscape or floral is hard to beat. The Golden Hour Landscape is one I'd start with.

Can I mix art prints with the things I already own?

Yes, and you should. Lean a print against a stack of books, beside a plant, or behind a candle. Mix the heights. Leave a little space around it so it can breathe.

Is an art print a good gift?

It's one of my favorites to give. She'll put it somewhere that matters to her, and it keeps being a gift every time she walks by. Tuck a handwritten note behind the frame. You can browse the prints here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do art prints need to be framed?

They look finished when they are. A simple frame from any store works, and a mat inside the frame makes a smaller print feel bigger.

How high should I hang an art print?

Hang it at about eye level, or about six to eight inches above a table, console, or sofa so the two read as one.

Can I lean art prints instead of hanging them?

Yes. Leaning is the easiest way to start, and it works on shelves, mantels, and counters. No tools needed.

Where can I buy hand-painted art prints?

My prints are here. I paint every design in Indiana, and most orders ship from my studio in 3-5 business days.
